The Healing Power of Laser Therapy

Retinal diseases vary but they often share some common signs and symptoms, such as seeing “floaters,” “cobwebs” or flashes of light in your field of vision, or having blurry, distorted or even or reduced vision. All of these are warning signs that your eyesight may be in danger and medical attention is necessary.

At the office of Retina Group of Washington – Virginia – Alexandria, our team of highly-skilled eye specialists is well equipped to diagnose and treat conditions of the retina, helping to restore or maintain healthy vision for our patients.

We can treat some common retinal conditions with a non-invasive procedure known as laser photocoagulation — where the heat of the laser works to seal the tear or destroy actively growing abnormal blood cells. The procedure can be successfully used on patients suffering from the following conditions and others:
— age-related macular degeneration: where the center of the retina begins to deteriorate
— macular edema: a build-up of fluid in the macula, an area in the center of the retina
— diabetic retinopathy: retinal damage as a result of poorly-controlled diabetes
— retinal vein occlusion: a blockage of the small veins that carry blood away from the retina
— retinal detachments: the back of the eye pulls away from the layer of blood vessels that provides it with oxygen and nutrients

After this relatively painless procedure, the surgeon may administer a topical steroid to prevent inflammation. Bed rest is usually recommended for the first few days, giving time for the eye to fully heal.

Diabetic retinopathy can be a debilitating eye disease. It is a condition that may develop if you have either type one or type two diabetes. The longer you have diabetes, the more likely you are to develop retinopathy as a result. At the Retina Group of Washington, we’re specialists not only when it come to eyes, but with an even greater concentration on the retina. When you have suffered with the effects of diabetic retinopathy, you can benefit from our laser eye surgery in Falls Church.

Among the symptoms that can occur with diabetic retinopathy is that your retinal blood vessels can rupture and leak. Obviously, it is unsettling to have blood in your eyes. It is also, of course, hazardous to your ocular well-being. In the early stages of diabetic retinopathy, typically there are not any symptoms at all. Often, the disease is detected as part of a routine eye exam. If caught early, simple adjustments in diet, exercise, and medication may be enough to manage it. But as it advances, there is greater chance that damage to your retinal blood vessels may occur. Our laser eye surgery in Falls Church uses laser heat to seal leaking blood vessels and/or to destroy ones that are no longer viable. Fortunately, the procedure can be done as an outpatient, right at our office. A hospital stay will not be necessary. You will be given local or topical anesthesia beforehand. Because you will probably experience blurred vision afterward, which may persist for a few days, you will need someone to take you to and from your appointment. There also may be some discomfort, but that too will subside in a day or two.

Our laser surgery in Falls Church is a safe and effective method for combating some of the most severe effects of diabetic retinopathy. Contact our office to arrange an appointment for an exam and consultation.
